Our history begins with the Sharbatly family, which is one of Saudi Arabia’s oldest and most prominent families in the business of trading. Based in Jeddah, the Sharbatly family has been an integral partner in the development of the country since the 1930s. The late Mr. Hassan Abbas Sharbatly, the founder of this family business, played a pivotal role since the early economic development of the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the pre-oil era. Furthermore, Mr. Hassan Abbas was a dedicated philanthropist as he made vast charitable contributions during his life in support of education, culture, social development and in alleviating poverty. In 1934, His Majesty the late King Abdulaziz Al Saud, the founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, recognized the work of Mr. Hassan Sharbatly by bestowing upon him the title of “His Excellency,” as well as the title of Minister of State without Portfolio. Such status was the first of its kind in the Kingdom. In post-oil era, Mr. Hassan was also the founder of many leading institutions like Riyad Bank and Saudi Arabian Refineries Company (SARCO). He also left behind a portfolio of companies concentrated in real estate, automotive, marine and trading sector.
